State of the Digital Decade 2026: Closing Structural Gaps and Mobilising Investments for 2030 and Beyond

11/03/2026 - 03:00 PM

As Europe continues to advance in its digital transformation process, there is a wide disparity in conditions from one country to another; visible progress is accompanied by structural shortcomings. This is the picture emerging from “State of the Digital Decade 2026”, which measures the EU’s progress each year towards the goals set out in the Digital Decade strategy. In particular, while infrastructure and technology uptake continue to rise, gaps persist in terms of skills, industrial capacity and the deployment of the most advanced solutions. Alongside these challenges, the Union is pursuing initiatives concerning computing capacity, the cloud, semiconductors and technological sovereignty. The challenge for Europe now is to translate its stronger digital foundation into greater industrial capacity and competitiveness, by accelerating the adoption of advanced technologies and strengthening skills, security, resilience and control over strategic digital assets.
