On May 6th, at the Federico II Polo Tecnologico in Naples, TIM organized the event "8ra cloud and edge continuum" dedicated to digital innovation, the cloud-edge continuum, and the technological ecosystem of Southern Italy.
The meeting was attended by experts from the institutional, academic, and industrial worlds, who discussed the emerging opportunities enabled by new technologies.
After a brief introduction by Prof. Domenico Accardo (CesMa), the discussion moved into full swing with the workshop “Ricerca e prospettive su cloud-edge continuum: il progetto IPCEI-CIS” (i.e. "Research and perspectives on cloud-edge continuum: the IPCEI-CIS project") during which Andrea Calvi (TIM) illustrated the evolution of the Edge-Cloud ecosystem and its new opportunities. Following him, Roberto Canonico (UniNA) spoke about the orchestration of resources for next-generation Telco infrastructures, and Gentiana Canga (Reply) presented the benefits and use cases for European businesses. Finally, Roberto Procopio (TIM) closed the session by outlining the specific objectives of the "TIM Edge Cloud Continuum" project and the fundamental role of IPCEI-CIS in creating a widespread European infrastructure.
In the second panel, "Evoluzione Ecosistema Sud" (i.e. "Evolution of the Southern Ecosystem"), Councillor Valeria Fascione (Campania Region), together with Alessio Botta (UniNA), Giovanni Frattini (Engineering), and Angelo Giuliana (Meditech), further explored the key role of cloud edge for innovation in the South Italy, specifically highlighting the importance of activating effective synergies between the industrial field and territorial administrations.
Finally, in the third panel, titled "Necessità e bisogni dell'industria" (i.e. "Needs and requirements of the industry"), company representatives from Digital Platform, SuperMicro, and Ivis Technologies emphasized the increasingly evident need to provide "democratic access" to new technologies.
The day also provided an opportunity to showcase several demos to the audience: one illustrated the development of 8ra's cloud edge with open-source technologies such as Sylva, another showed the use of AI applied to real-time monitoring systems. Two other demos presented two use cases: "eTourism" and "Smart Roads," two concrete examples of the application of cloud edge to the world of tourism for a tourist experience with augmented reality and improved traffic management for urban safety and fluidity.
The meeting was an opportunity to reiterate the growing awareness of the potential of cloud-edge and the willingness of companies, institutions, and universities to collaborate for a more inclusive and competitive digital future, for Southern Italy and for the entire country.
