TIM takes part in Lab8ra, the European laboratory providing a testing platform to experiment in real-world conditions with new Cloud-Edge Continuum architectures, based on open-source technologies and shared European standards.
The project was launched within the IPCEI-CIS programme with the aim of strengthening European digital sovereignty by promoting an ecosystem built on open, interoperable and federated architectures, in line with European Union guidelines and the EU Data Act regulatory framework.
A multi-site platform to test innovation in real-world conditions
Lab8ra provides enterprises, universities, startups and the scientific community with a distributed experimentation environment made up of multiple interconnected physical sites. It is designed to test in real‑world conditions the integration between open‑source software and the latest generation of European standards, fostering innovation, collaboration, and evidence‑based validation.
The platform is already operational and accessible to 20 organisations across 7 countries, including Italy, France and Germany.
TIM’s role
Within the project, TIM contributes to coordination and technological integration by providing specialised expertise, infrastructure and open innovation activities.
The objective is to accelerate the implementation of a federated Cloud-Edge Continuum capable of supporting the development and delivery of advanced digital services, while making innovation more governable, secure and scalable at European level.
From healthcare to cybersecurity: the use cases
Lab8ra enables concrete experimentation in strategic domains, also developed with TIM’s contribution, demonstrating the value of a distributed Cloud-Edge infrastructure in complex scenarios:
- Healthcare, with distributed solutions for clinical data analysis and the generation of personalised recommendations, integrating data lakes, analytics and language models, with anonymisation mechanisms.
- Digital Twin, to accelerate the development and deployment of reactive digital twins and enable real-time analytics and decision support on complex systems.
- Data-driven maritime services, with advanced real-time analytics capabilities to optimise shipping activities and port infrastructures, improving logistics efficiency.
- AI-driven cybersecurity, with intelligent threat detection systems and protection of critical infrastructures, ensuring privacy protection and data security in distributed environments.
An enabler for Europe’s ambitions on AI and data
Thanks to its distributed architecture, Lab8ra enables testing and validation at European scale of advanced cloud, edge and artificial intelligence solutions, contributing to the creation of a more competitive, resilient and secure digital ecosystem.
In this context, the project aligns with the European roadmap outlined in the AI Continent Action Plan and fosters the development of new industrial capabilities related to data and high-performance computing, also supporting the growth of AI Factories, hubs designed to sustain research, startups and next-generation applications.
