A project combining technological innovation and energy efficiency kicks off in Rozzano. Through a collaboration between our TIM Enterprise business unit and GETEC - Europe's leading provider of energy efficiency and renewable energy services - for the first time in Italy, the heat produced by a data centre is recovered and used for teleheating over 5,000 homes in the ALER district.
With this innovative solution, the households in that area will receive heating and hot water generated by the thermal energy derived from our Rozzano Data Centre, one of the most important in Italy. A heat exchangers and heat pumps system captures and redirects this thermal power to the district heating network operated by GETEC. Then, the heat is distributed to the neighbourhood buildings, through an underground piping system, heating up the rooms and providing hot water for residents.
Adopting this technology will significantly reduce natural gas consumption and carbon dioxide emissions in the Rozzano ALER district. It is estimated that, thanks to it, around 3,500 tonnes of CO2 emissions per year will be avoided, with a positive impact comparable to the planting of 17,500 trees. This important milestone shows how it is possible to combine technological development with environmental sustainability.
In addition, the partnership between TIM Enterprise and GETEC includes the adoption of advanced digital technologies to optimise thermal energy production and distribution. Through it, the district heating network will become even more dynamic and flexible to manage, further reducing waste and improving operational efficiency.
The Rozzano Data Centre spreads over approximately 90,000 square metres, and is part of TIM Enterprise's extensive infrastructure network, the largest in Italy, consisting of 16 Data Centres throughout the country. By 2026, a new plant near Rome will bring the Group's total capacity to 125 Megawatts, further strengthening the commitment to sustainable energy management.
All TIM Group Data Centres have been designed and built according to the latest eco-sustainability, energy efficiency, reliability, security and low environmental impact criteria, and have obtained over 100 certifications.
