Telecom Italia and Postel team up to protect the environment

From February, Postel is printing Telecom Italia’s bills on low environmental impact ecological paper

The Telecom Italia Group and Italian Post Office Group company Postel have joined forces to launch a project for the sustainable management of bill printing and envelopes using special, extremely low environmental impact paper.

From February, to reduce the environmental impact of its billing process, Telecom Italia is printing and sending out bills to its customers via Postel on Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified paper. The FSC is an international non-governmental organization that promotes the management of forests and plantations around the world in respect of the natural environment, protecting work for local populations, and observing the principles of sustainable development. The FSC logo that appears on Telecom Italia bill paper and envelopes identifies products made from wood sourced from properly stewarded forests in accordance with strict environmental, social and economic standards.

Certification guarantees that the product is traceable all the way from the forest of origin to point-of-sale. A series of controls and a special labelling system enables companies and consumers to identify wood and wood products from properly-stewarded forests. A total of 11 forests in Italy are currently FSC-certified (covering a total of just under 43,000 hectares); 352 Italian wood industry companies also qualify for certification.
This initiative is part of the Telecom Italia Group’s strategy for environmental sustainability, which is based on the principles of optimizing the use of natural resources, minimizing negative impact on the environment, raising awareness about environmental issues, and adopting responsible procurement policies.
Telecom Italia began using FSC-certified paper in its offices in 2008. For 2009, the Group has set itself the target of acquiring a majority of its paper from FSC-certified sources.
