DIGITAL TECHNOLOGIES ARE ON THE RISE: TIM UNVEILS ITS CLIMATE TRANSITION PLAN TO REDUCE THEIR ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT

ESG targets built on actions already planned, available technologies and over €500 million in funding envisaged in the Industrial Plan

Digital technologies will continue to grow. There will be a need for greater connectivity, cloud services and artificial intelligence-based applications. Through its Climate Transition Plan, TIM sets out how to support this evolution whilst reducing the environmental impact of its infrastructure and operations. The Plan’s ESG objectives have been developed on the basis of measures already planned, identified financial resources and technologies available to the Group in Italy and Brazil.

The Plan sets out a roadmap for the progressive reduction of emissions by 2030, 2040 and 2050, addressing all the Group’s main sources of emissions, including the supply chain, which accounts for over 90 per cent of TIM’s overall carbon footprint.

The main areas of focus include improving the energy efficiency of infrastructure, adopting technologies with a lower environmental impact, maintaining energy supply from renewable sources, and aligning the supply chain with TIM’s ESG objectives.

Measures already planned include accelerating the migration to 5G, which helps to reduce energy consumption per unit of traffic carried, and modernising data centres with more efficient cooling and energy management systems. To achieve this, TIM plans to commit approximately €550 million, already included in the Group’s industrial roadmap.

«Cloud computing and artificial intelligence are driving demand for connectivity and computing power at an unprecedented rate. We cannot ignore this. With our Climate Transition Plan, we have set out a path to reduce our emissions whilst supporting digital growth. We will make our processes and infrastructure more efficient to reduce consumption and adopt technologies with a lower environmental impact. The more the system is able to create the economic conditions to support this challenge, the more ambitious the results we will be able to achieve», said Pietro Labriola, TIM Chief Executive Officer.

The Plan will be subject to periodic monitoring and may be updated to reflect developments in the technological, industrial and regulatory context, so as to keep its targets consistent with the Group’s development and the best available solutions. Pending the definition of the new Industrial Plan, the ESG targets related to gender equality and advanced digital solutions remain confirmed. The Climate Transition Plan has been approved by TIM’s Board of Directors and is available on Group TIM’s website Sustainability section, together with the Group ESG targets.
