The university orientation course that the Scuola Normale Superiore di Pisa, in conjunction with Telecom Italia, has organized in Camigliatello Silano, near Cosenza, will begin on Tuesday, July 21 in a full-fledged campus reserved for the 90 best students who are about to embark on the last year of high school.
The course in Camigliatello, organized in conjunction with Fondazione Napoli 99 since 2005 and which this year has also received the sponsorship of the Region of Calabria, will enable the students – selected for their academic merits – to be accommodated entirely free of charge in Torre Camigliati, in the suggestive setting of the Parco Old Calabria, to attend a week’s worth of classes held by an illustrious teaching staff, with moments dedicated to further discussion and cultural exchange. It will be a stimulating experience that will enable the young students to focus on their personal interests and to make an informed choice regarding their future.
The course, ending on Monday July 27, will involve students from many Italian high schools, including ones abroad. Specifically, 13 students are from Lazio, 11 are from Apulia Puglia, 10 are from Campania, 10 are from Calabria, 7 are from Lombardy, 7 are from Sicily, 6 are from Tuscany, 6 are from Veneto, 5 are from Emilia Romagna, 3 are from Marche, 3 are from Abruzzo, 3 are from Basilicata, 3 are from Piedmont, 2 are from Umbria and 1 is from Belgium.
The course will start on the morning of Tuesday July 21, with a lesson by archaeologist Salvatore Settis, director of the Normale; on the same and in subsequent days it will be followed by lessons held by historian Daniele Menozzi, physicist Roberto Bartolino, journalist Armando Torno, art historian Tommaso Montanari, biologist Arturo Falaschi, astrophysicist Luigi Stella, mathematician Carlo Toffalori, art historian Paul Zanker, economist Giuseppe Catalano, psychiatrist Pietro Petrini, chemist Francesco Paolucci, linguist Rita Librandi, philologist Glenn W. Most, mathematician Angelo Vistoli, philologist Filippomaria Pontani, politologist Roberto D’Alimonte, computer scientist Daniele Nardi, science philosopher Guglielmo Tamburrini and Constitutional Court judge Paolo Maddalena. Additionally, seminars and tutoring activities will be held by graduate students from the Scuola Normale Superiore.
This is the third course for this year. Previously, between June 28 and July 4, approximately 100 students were accommodated in Cortona, near Arezzo, and 100 others were accommodated in Colle Val d’Elsa, near Siena, on July 11 - 17. Other sessions are scheduled respectively in Rovereto (September 1-7) and San Miniato (September 5-11). Overall, 450 students will be involved.
The initiative, confirming the commitment of the Scuola Normale di Pisa and Telecom Italia towards developing young intellectual talent in Italy, is being met with increasing interest by both Italian high schools, with a trend of increasing recommenations in recent years, and by public institutions, as demonstrated, in the case of the course in Camigliatello Silano, by the Region of Calabria’s sponsorship.
Moreover, for the first time this year, partly thanks to the technological platforms provided by Telecom Italia, another 1,500 students recommended by high school headmasters will have the opportunity to follow a selection of lessons from the orientation courses from home over the web.
