FS-Telecom Italia: free Wi-Fi on Frecciarossa until June 11

Promotion giving passengers free internet access on Turin – Naples High Speed rail link extended until summer schedule becomes effective

05/02/2011 - 12:05 PM

Free Wi-Fi on Frecciarossa trains until June 11. Ferrovie dello Stato and Telecom Italia have extended the promotion that began last December giving passengers free internet access aboard trains until the new summer schedule goes into effect. The goal is to make as many customers of the – Naples High Speed rail link as possible aware of the innovative service and its potentialities.

To use the free WiFi service, passengers must simply log on to the onboard portal and input their mobile phone numbers in order to receive their WiFi access credentials via SMS. Passengers without an Italian mobile phone number may obtain their credentials by registering on the portal for the symbolic fee of €0.01, which will be charged to their credit cards.

The combined efforts of the FS Group and Telecom Italia have produced a marked improvement of communications services aboard Frecciarossa trains: from cell phone coverage to the availability of data connections via USB dongle, to the innovative WiFi connection that enables passengers to browse the Internet and that will soon also provide access to a host of multimedia content.

The entire fleet of 60 Frecciarossa trains is now equipped with UMTS radio signal boosters and WiFi access points in each carriage. The UMTS mobile infrastructure has also been upgraded through the installation of 74 new 3G connectivity nodes, which have extended network coverage and capacity along the approximately 1000 KM of High Speed lines, including no less that 82 tunnels.
