The TIM Group has joined the international Eco Rating project, a system to assess and measure the level of environmental sustainability of smartphones, thus promoting more conscious and sustainable purchasing choices by customers.
Eco Rating is an initiative conceived and launched in 24 countries last year thanks to the collaboration of some of the leading international telephone operators such as Deutsche Telekom, Orange, Telefónica (operating under the brands O2, Vivo and Movistar), Telia and Vodafone. In 2022, EE, NOS and Proximus also joined the initiative.
Today, the Eco Rating initiative has expanded to 35 countries in Europe, Africa, South America and soon Asia/Pacific.
The project's methodology analyses the main environmental parameters in the production, transport, use and disposal phases of mobile devices and consequently assigns a sustainability score to the product on a scale from 1 to 100, where higher scores indicate better sustainability performance. The Eco Rating label highlights the score achieved by the product, but also its adequacy on five key aspects of sustainability: durability, reparability, recyclability, climate efficiency and resource efficiency.
It is a key tool in spreading purchasing awareness that will give customers all the information they need to evaluate the product in terms of sustainability and will also encourage suppliers to reduce the environmental impact of their devices and promote awareness throughout the supply chain.
Starting in 2023, TIM will apply the Eco Rating label on specific smartphones in Italy and Brazil, through TIM Brasil.
This initiative emphasises the importance of alliances between companies as a means of realising shared goals and defining industry-wide standard metrics to accelerate the development of a sustainable digital economy.
