World Environment Day 2026 is dedicated to climate change and the solutions that can help us address it. This is an issue that affects everyone—institutions, businesses, and citizens—and is currently a central theme of the Green & Blue Festival, of which TIM is a partner.
In a discussion with Federico Ferrazza, our CEO Pietro Labriola noted that reducing the environmental footprint of digital technology and helping people use technology in an informed and critical way are increasingly intertwined.
Digital technology is also part of the climate challenge. Every day, we use more data, more digital services, and more computing power. That is why technological growth must go hand in hand with increasingly efficient use of energy and resources, while also helping to make activities, services, and regions more efficient.
In recent years, at TIM, we have focused on three key areas: energy, efficiency, and the circular economy.
By 2025, Italy will also have reached 100% of its electricity purchased from certified renewable sources—a milestone that Brazil has already achieved since 2021.
We are also working to improve the energy efficiency of our digital infrastructure and data centers. Our investments in 5G are a concrete example: this technology allows us to transmit significantly more data than previous generations, while using less energy per unit of traffic. And in Rozzano, for example, in addition to optimizing electricity usage, we recover the heat generated by the data center to help provide district heating to over 5,000 homes, resulting in an estimated reduction of approximately 3,500 tons of CO₂ emissions per year.
In addition to these initiatives, we promote the reuse and refurbishment of equipment and devices. In 2025, the Group’s waste generation decreased by 25% compared to the previous year, and approximately 97% was sent for recycling.
Reducing our environmental impact is just one part of the journey. Digital technology can help businesses, governments, and communities make better use of energy, resources, and information. From smart infrastructure management to urban services, and from industry to healthcare, data and connectivity can help reduce waste, optimize processes, and improve decision-making.
These are just a few examples of the initiatives we’ve undertaken to support digital growth while prioritizing the environment. To learn more about our approach to sustainability and the results we’ve achieved, visit the Sustainability section of our website.
