Today, EIT Digital and TIM – with the support of Expo 2015 – presented the new ExplorMI 360 App, which helps visitors to Expo 2015 and Milan learn about ongoing events and available services based on their needs and location.

ExplorMI 360 - which is downloadable to smartphones for free and available with TIM2go, an innovative tablet sharing service - is an advanced tool for exploring places and events in Milan and for creating preference lists. It uses a tourist information service based on a geolocalisation system, as well as data from the E015 Digital Ecosystem. For example, before arriving in Milan, a tourist could search for hotels that are located near both a gym and a 20-minute underground ride from EXPO. While a visitor at EXPO could easily find events taking place near the Italian Pavilion and receive directions for getting there to their smartphone.

The application is part of a group of services linked to the 3cixty platform, which was created using advanced technology provided by a consortium of project partners and is coordinated by EIT Digital. Along with TIM, which developed the Android application through the Joint Open Lab initiative of open innovation between industry and university, other contributors to the project are: DFKI, Eurecom, INRIA, Politecnico di Milano, Universidad Politécnica de Madrid, CEFRIEL, Delft University of Technology, Politecnico di Milano Foundation and the startups Ambientic, Evensi, InnoValor, Localidata and Mobidot. These 14 partners, coming from five European countries, worked within the framework of the EIT Digital European network with the objective of capitalising on their skills and strengthening their market presence. In particular, data coming from numerous local or global information sources were integrated on a semantic level and made available to users through various interfaces, thanks to the use of innovative technology and sophisticated data analysis technology. An open platform was used to integrate the various components; this made the data available to developers for the creation of the App and its services.

From the experience of creating the ExplorMI 360 app for Milan, the 3cixty platform will be exported to London and later to other European cities.
