Connected ecosystem. Telecommunication infrastructure as engine of global transformation

Telecommunications networks and technologies have become the invisible infrastructure that underpins much of the country’s everyday life. They enable access to banking services, facilitate remote work, support digital education, create new forms of sports entertainment and power advanced applications for public safety and territorial monitoring

“The Connected Ecosystem” report, produced by Centro Studi TIM, analyses the importance of telecommunications for the country’s digital, social and economic development. The study shows how ultra-broadband, advanced mobile networks and 5G are not merely connectivity technologies, but enabling factors for innovation, digital inclusion, service continuity and the competitiveness of the economic system.

Across five areas of analysis, digital banking services, remote working, school and education, sports entertainment and public safety, the report analyses the enabling role of telecommunications networks and technologies within the connected ecosystem. The analysis combines global trends, international and national benchmarks and documented cases from across Italy, offering an evidence-based perspective on their contribution to Italy’s digital growth.

Smart Infrastructure. Italian infrastructure between challenges and innovation

Intelligent monitoring systems can help prevent up to 27% of structural failures in aging infrastructure and reduce road network and civil works management costs by 31%, thereby extending the operational lifespan of infrastructure assets.

In electricity networks, the deployment of IoT sensors and advanced digital platforms can optimise distribution and reduce losses, delivering annual savings of nearly €700 million. In the water sector, smart metering and advanced monitoring solutions could generate savings of up to €2.6 billion by 2030.

Today, Artificial Intelligence, advanced sensing technologies, robotics and drones – supported by high performance 5G connectivity and robust cybersecurity solutions – are driving the development of a new, future proof infrastructure system in Italy.

These insights are outlined in the Smart Infrastructure Report produced by the TIM Research Centre, in cooperation with Intesa Sanpaolo Innovation Centre, the Digital Innovation Observatories of the Politecnico di Milano, and Comtel Innovation.
