The Network as a service ecosystem

The TIM HiTech "Tomorrow Telco: focus on Italy" event on the evolution of Network as a Service with Pietro Labriola and Elisabetta Romano

07/13/2023 - 12:45 PM

Cloud, edge and quantum computing are at the heart of the network platforms of the future and their evolution into Network as a Service (NaaS), i.e., the transition from a closed infrastructure to a true ecosystem open to technology partners.

The potential and challenges of this new model, which can accelerate the development of innovative digital solutions, were the focus of the "TIM HiTech - Tomorrow Telco, focus on Italy event, organised on 12 July in Rome by TIM with the participation of national and international telecommunications operators, members of the Global Leadership Forum and representatives of the Italian ICT market.

Pietro Labriola, CEO of TIM, opened the event "Tomorrow Telco: focus on Italy"

During the meeting, central themes were touched upon, such as the transformation of architectures, new business models, and the separation of passive infrastructure and network intelligence, all aspects on which it is essential to consolidate dialogue with all the key stakeholders in the sector: telecommunications operators, digital players, and regulators. After all, the exponential increase in the volume of data since the pandemic and the difficulties it has posed for the resilience of networks has shown that their development must be planned well in advance, in collaboration with the other players in the digital chain.

In this context, the adoption of the NaaS model will play a key role, enabling developers, large Web players and start-ups to create new digital services for citizens, companies and public administrations: from autonomous driving to virtual reality, from supercomputing to Big Data-enhanced healthcare, to corporate sustainability solutions. TIM has everything it needs for this turnaround, being able to count on the most widespread network in the country that not only provides homes, offices and production facilities with ultra-wideband, but also enriches telecommunications stations with cloud technologies, creating a true  Edge Cloud Continuum.

Elisabetta Romano, Chief Network Operations & Wholesale Officer of TIM and President of Sparkle has presented the event in Rome

NaaS is an evolution that will necessarily look beyond national borders, and in this perspective TIM can leverage Sparkle's infrastructure. Thanks to undersea cables, hubs in Milan and Sicily, international PoPs, and brand new Data Centres such as the Panama Digital Gateway, Sparkle's infrastructure represents the true Mediterranean infrastructure bridge between key hubs in the Middle East, the United States, Central America and Europe, on which to implement Network as a Service solutions that unite the continents.

During the event, participants were also able to experience first-hand, in Demo corners, TIM's evolution in technologies such as the 'Edge Cloud, the 5G Stand Alone, the fiber connectivity up to 50 GB quantum computing for cyber security.
