Telecom Italia is accelerating its rollout of ultra-broadband and launching its next generation fiber-optic network-based services using FTTCab (Fiber to the Cabinet) architecture offering download speeds of 30 Megabits per second and uploads at 3 Megabits per second, making it possible to access applications in real time and allowing multiple users to access HD multimedia content simultaneously.

Starting tomorrow, customers will be able to subscribe to the brand new “Ultra Internet Fibra Ottica” packages in an initial three cities: Rome, Turin and Naples. Rollout of fiber optic network services will be extended over the next few weeks to Milan, Genoa, Bologna and Bari.

The rollout of new fiber-optic services is the result of a major boost Telecom Italia has given its proprietary NGAN (Next Generation Access Network) network development programme. Infrastructure preparation is underway in 31 Italian cities, a number set to rise to a hundred by the end of 2014, corresponding to coverage of around 6 million properties (25% of the population); over 200 cabinets are being upgraded every week. Fiber laying is already at an advanced stage in the cities of Rome, Turin, Naples, Milan, Genoa, Bologna, Bari, Catania, Venice, Florence, Padua, Palermo, Verona, Ancona, Bergamo, Brescia, Como, Brindisi, Perugia, Reggio Emila, Treviso, Udine, Monza, Forlì, Varese, Taranto, Pisa, Prato, Catanzaro, Vicenza and Pescara.

The next-generation network development plan leverages FTTCab architecture by laying fiber optic cable to roadside cabinets. Technological advances in the near future will raise ultra-broadband service speeds to in excess of 100 Megabit/s.

The technological performance of Telecom Italia’s new “Ultra Internet Fibra Ottica” packages leverages fiber to the Cabinet connections and VDSL technology to ensure data transmission speeds approaching the nominal maximum. This solution enhances the web surfing experience by offering access to high-definition streaming video content – from multiple devices within the home such as smartphones, tablets and smart TVs linked with the new modem – as well as VoIP voice services and high-quality online multiplayer gaming. At launch, the initial connection speed is up to 30 Megabit/s, which meets the European Digital Agenda indicated speed targeted to be available to 100% of the population by 2020.

In January 2013, Telecom Italia is rolling out an “Ultra Internet Fibra Ottica” product to business customers. To boost the growth and digitization of Italian enterprise tangibly and to help turn around the nation’s economy, in pursuit of Italia Digital Agenda programmes this solution is being made available at the same price as the package based on traditional technologies, ensuring the highest possible performance for the same outlay. Customers who subscribe to the package will be able to access the world of Impresa Semplice IT services and exploit them to their full potential via fiber-optic access.

After rolling out LTE (Long Term Evolution) network-dedicated packages on its mobile telephony network, Telecom Italia is now, for the fixed line network, demonstrating its desire to offer the people and businesses of Italy technologically-advanced services that leverage increasingly modern, high-performance networks.
