Smart Infrastructure

Italian infrastructure between challenges and innovation

With intelligent monitoring systems, up to 27% of collapses in older structures can be prevented, and the management costs of road networks and civil works can be reduced by 31%, extending the lifespan of infrastructure.

In power grids, the use of IoT sensors and advanced platforms can optimize distribution and reduce losses, saving nearly €700 million per year. In the water sector, smart meters and advanced monitoring can generate savings of €2.6 billion by 2030.

Today, Artificial Intelligence, sensor technology, robotics, and drones—supported by high-performance 5G connections and advanced cybersecurity solutions—are driving the development of a new, future-proof Italian infrastructure system.

These findings emerge from the Smart Infrastructure Report produced by the TIM Research Center, in collaboration with Intesa Sanpaolo Innovation Center, the Digital Innovation Observatories of the Politecnico di Milano, and Comtel Innovation.
