Since 2022 we have been collaborating with Climate Network, a nonprofit with certified methodologies, to carry out concrete actions to benefit biodiversity and communities. There are two fronts on which we are working: on one side, urban and peri-urban forestation, to protect nature and improve the lives of people in the area; and on the other, support international projects, to offset emissions from the websites of the TIM Group.
These activities, in addition to having a positive impact on the environment, have enabled us to strengthen our ties with the local area and communities and with our colleagues in the city where we carried out the interventions. After three years, we take stock of what we have done and what results we have already achieved.
Over 1,000 trees planted in Italy, with the participation of colleagues and their families
Milan - Parco Nord. In 2022 we carried out urban reforestation at Milan's Parco Nord, planting 150 trees. Over their lifetime - about 30 years - they will absorb about 50 tons of CO₂, the equivalent of the emissions generated by 500 refrigerators turned on for a year. The initiative, carried out with the active participation of TIM Group colleagues, followed the Foresta Italia® Protocol of Rete Clima, which requires the use of local species and ensures proper maintenance over time.
The “Piante Elìte” project in Umbria. In 2022 we also supported the “Piante Elìte” project in the Città della Pieve-Piegaro forest in Umbria. The goal was to protect rare tree species by helping them grow better through specific forest care and management techniques. The project involved GPS mapping of rare trees over an area of 160 hectares, the creation of a biodiversity trail with rest areas and information panels with QR codes, and outreach activities to engage the local community.
Rome – Parco di Aguzzano. In 2023 we intervened in the Aguzzano Urban Regional Park in Rome, a green area surrounded by buildings. Here we planted 540 trees, together with 150 people including TIM employees, family members and friends. Over the next 30 years, these trees will absorb more than 202 tons of CO₂ - the equivalent of the emissions of more than 1 million kilometers driven by car, nearly 29 times around the world. The intervention has improved the climate resilience of the area and enriched biodiversity with species such as oak, cherry, hornbeam, elm, and poplar.
Turin - Parco Stura Sud. Finally, in 2024 we carried out a new forestation operation in Turin's South Stura Park. Again with the involvement of colleagues and their families and friends, we planted 400 trees and shrubs using the Tiny Forest - or Miyawaki Forest - technique, which allows rapid growth and high environmental regeneration capacity. This compact but highly effective microforest will absorb about 160,000 kg of CO₂ over its lifetime, with an impact equal to the elimination of more than 1.7 million plastic bottles. A small green space, but with great value for the urban environment.
All projects were implemented as part of Rete Clima's Foresta Italia® National Campaign, following a protocol that uses local species and ensures the long-term care and maintenance of forestry systems.
The project in Brazil to offset emissions from TIM Group websites
Since FY 2021 we have been offsetting emissions generated by TIM Group websites. We do this by purchasing certified carbon credits from the international The Envira Amazonia REDD+ project, active in Brazil, thus contributing to the preservation of 39,000 hectares of tropical forest and the development of local communities. Over the course of 30 years, it will avoid the emission of about 1.2 million tons of CO₂ per year. The emissions to be offset are calculated using the CO2web® methodology, developed by Climate Network and verified by the certifying body ICMQ
These initiatives involve significant challenges: they require constant care of the planted areas and careful monitoring over time to verify the real benefits. But it is precisely continuity over time that gives value to these interventions. Planting trees in cities, promoting sustainable forest management or participating in international projects such as the one in Brazil are not just about offsetting emissions: they are concrete gestures that strengthen the link between TIM, the territories and communities where we are present. At a time of great environmental and social change, these choices allow us to be close to people, employees, citizens, stakeholders, and to contribute to a transformation that is truly shared, combining development, responsibility and positive impact. That is why we will not stop here and we will soon tell you about new projects and collaborations. Stay tuned!
