Strategies to achieve the digitisation of Italy at the centre of our CEO's speech at the event in Bari

“On the need to digitise Italy, we all agree. But there is no point in skirting around it. Without investment in infrastructure and services, the digitisation of this country will be neither rapid nor effective. And to be able to afford them, we have to evolve our industry and our development models now.”

With these words, TIM CEO Pietro Labriola spoke at the event called La Ripartenza, the annual review of debates on the Italian economy and society led and organised by journalist Nicola Porro. This year's venue was Teatro Petruzzelli in Bari, on 7 and 8 July.

During the Enterprise and Infrastructure panel, where he debated with other leading Italian top managers, Labriola touched on a number of pressing issues, such as the excessive fragmentation of the European market, and then returned to the need to develop the networks of the future without delay to accelerate the country's recovery.

"The obvious example is 5G. This technology is essential for industrial advancement and competitiveness, which, in Italy, has suffered first from the highest international licensing costs and then from the constraints and higher costs of building new infrastructure. 5G means new business, security and service models, such as smart cities. It cannot wait. We have to make brave decisions now.”

Concluding his speech, Labriola recalled, "After years in which the increase in operators helped the spread of services, giving customers the opportunity to choose also on the basis of price, the fragmentation of the market has been impeding industry growth for some time now.”  He also emphasised that, “We must recover profitability through new development models for the entire industry.”
