For the third year in a row, the Telecom Italia Group has produced a socio-environmental report which attests to the commitment of the Group to striking a balance between satisfactory economic results and value creation on the one hand, and social and environmental responsibilities on the other.
The performance of the Group was evaluated with reference to a specific set of indicators: electricity consumption, the quantity of waste produced, the use of natural resources, etc. Performance was also measured against the most reliable international standards for gauging environmental impact, and Telecom Italia emerged as a group whose activities are consistent with the goal of sustainable development. In other words, the Telecom Italia Group is capable of satisfying the demands of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to provide for their needs.
With respect to 1998, the Telecom Italia Group has increased its value contribution to its major stakeholders, namely: employees, shareholders, customers, suppliers, competitors, the state, society as a whole and future generations. The wealth distributed to the state in 1999 amounted to 10,000 billion lire, an increase of 24.9% with respect to the previous year. The wealth passed on to minority shareholders increased by approximately 115%, while the contribution of the company to initiatives and projects in favor of environmental protection safety and health in the workplace, trials in the use of technologies with low environmental impact, all of which are aimed at making it possible for future generations and communities to continue to produce, amounted to 141 billion lire, equal to 1.1% of the Group´s operating results for the year 1999.
For Telecom Italia, it is a matter of priority to ensure the participation in activities relating to the environment and society by all its employees, whose success in their diverse fields drives the company forward. Their participation coupled with the good example of a management that is at once alert to environmental and social issues and responsible towards the company will help spread the culture of sustainable development.
