Telecom Italia’s directory enquiries service changes number after 50 years. Twenty-four hours a day, the new 1254 service provides the phone numbers of residential customers, businesses, government offices, public service numbers, toll-free numbers and international numbers from all carriers
From October 1, Telecom Italia’s operator-assisted directory enquiries service changes to a new four-digit number, 1254.
Active 24 hours a day, the 1254 service supplies phone numbers for all telephone subscribers, regardless of carrier: residential customers, businesses, government offices, public service numbers, toll-free numbers and international numbers.
Searches of the reliable and constantly updated database may be made by name, address, telephone number, fax number or area.
Call charges to the 1254 service from fixed-line telephones and Telecom Italia public telephones are as follows: From fixed line telephones, there is a €0.36 charge on answer and calls are billed at €1.56 per minute (including VAT). Calls from public telephones are charged four units on answer, and then one unit every 2.6 seconds – each unit corresponds to €0.10 including VAT; units are tallied from the beginning of the call.
Subscribers to other fixed-line and mobile carriers can call 1254 too. Customers should contact their carrier to find out costs.
The directory enquiries services market was opened up to competition in 2003. In compliance with the Communications Regulatory Authority, from October 1, 2005 the “12” service is being replaced with four digit numbers beginning with “12” (12xy) assigned to service providers by the Ministry of Communications.
Italy’s original and best-known directory enquiries line, the 12 service began operating in 1955. Now, 50 years on, Telecom Italia directory enquiries hallmark expertise and technologically-advanced services are transferring to 1254.
