The Environment Ministry and Telecom Italia sign agreement for the development of a new sustainability model for the TLC/ICT sector

The agreement foresees joint initiatives to measure and reduce the carbon footprint for fixed / mobile telecommunications and information and communication technology

05/21/2012 - 05:35 PM

The Minister for the Environment Corrado Clini and Telecom Italia CEO Marco Patuano today signed a voluntary agreement to promote efforts to measure, contain and neutralise the Group's carbon footprint - greenhouse gas emissions generated primarily by power consumption.

For more than a decade Telecom Italia has been active in monitoring and reporting its impact on the environment and is listed on the main global sustainability indexes. This agreement with the Ministry reflects the Group's eagerness to further reinforce its policy on climate change. Specifically it sets out to define a methodology for the calculation of the carbon footprint both for Telecom Italia's core activities (data and voice transmission and TLC/ICT services), and for emissions generated by innovative services delivered or produced by its supply chain. It will also consider the role played by ICT services in helping to realise a digital society, with positive effects on the quality of life of people and the environment.
A Steering and Monitoring Committee has been set up to oversee management of the agreement composed of high profile figures from the Ministry and the company, together with technical experts from both signatories.

Minister Clini commented:“The signature of a communications technology company like Telecom to a voluntary carbon emissions limitation agreement is a clear sign that the union of innovation and environmental sustainability has become rooted in Italian industry, especially in the high tech segments, and represents a vital trump card for Italian firms to play on the global table of competitiveness.”

“Telecom Italia's firm commitment to environmental sustainability is reflected in the excellent results achieved in reducing the Group's power consumption and CO2 emissions," said Marco Patuano. "Consumers today are increasingly sensitive to the environment and their concerns make our attention to sustainability issues an increasingly important factor for competitiveness and success.”
