Telecom Italia is launching its smart telephone box competition online today. The purpose is to develop services, applications and innovative contents for the phone box of the future that will soon be tested in Italy.

The smart telephone box is a Telecom Italia and “Ubi connected” joint project, it is based

on an open and flexible platform, capable of interacting with the web's 2.0 environment. In addition to traditional telephony services, the new phone box will be able to provide, within a sole technological environment,  numerous functions according to the “internet of things” and “smart cities” model. University students and software developers taking part in the competition will be able to enrich the prototype with their ideas and projects, during its trial stage.

Contributions and ideas can be sent in to Telecom Italia's dedicated website at www.cabinaintelligente.telecomitalia.com. The deadline is the 23rd May and a group of experts will select which ideas to reward in June. The best four ideas created by software developers will become part of the services provided within the smart booth's suite in its prototype version.

The best six ideas brought forward by university students will also be rewarded with a Telecom Italia internship, offering the possibility to continue working and taking part in the smart phone box project.

Internet will also play an important part in the competition through its social networks. On Telecom Italia Group's facebook page it will be possible to vote the best ideas sent in by university students. The idea with most votes wins one of the latest smartphones available. The developmental stage of the project can also be followed on Twitter #cabinaintelligente.

The competition will be introduced today at “Codemotion 2012”, an event held until tomorrow in Rome and dedicated to new programming languages and software developers and organized by Roma Tre University. Its main sponsor is Telecom Italia.
