TIM: 40 years ago achieved in Turin the world first fibre optic connection

TIM’s fibre optic network now covers 71% of the Italian territory with over than 17 million homes

On 15 September 1977, exactly 40 years ago, TIM laid in Turin the first fibre optic cable between the urban telephone exchanges Stampalia and Lucento. The connection was completed through an experiment coordinated by CSELT (Center for Studies and Telecommunications Laboratories), the former SIP Research and Development Company, the current TIM Open Lab.

The world first set at that time by SIP allowed to successfully experiment various digital transmission systems, with simulations through lengths ranging from 1 to 17 kilometres, and performing connections in a very short time thanks to an innovative patented method called Springroove®.

TIM’s path, whose history has deep roots, started in Turin and continued over the years thanks to the Group’s continuing focus on investments and innovation, up to its current first in the development of the 5G network.

TIM has brought the ultra-broadband fibre optic connection across the whole country and now covers 71% of the Italian territory with more than 17 million homes in around 2,100 municipalities, thanks to the major investments provided in the three-year period 2017-2019 amounting to around 11 billion euros in Italy, of which 5 dedicated exclusively to the development of fixed and mobile ultra-broadband.
