On TimVision ‘DallAmeriCaruso: the lost concert’ by Walter Veltroni – an exclusive film event

03/04/2024 - 11:30 AM

An exclusive preview of DallAmeriCaruso. Il concerto perduto (DallAmeriCaruso. The lost concert), the film event directed by Walter Veltroni and produced by Nexo Digital and Sony Music, is coming to TimVision today, 4 March, Lucio Dalla’s birthday.

For the first time, the documentary film shows the complete footage of Dalla’s 1986 concert at the Village Gate in New York, directed by Ambrogio Lo Giudice. It was almost entirely lost, but has now been found again, restored and remastered.

In addition to reviving that night of music in New York, DallAmeriCaruso. Il concerto perduto tells the story of how ‘Caruso’ came into existence. The song, composed in Sorrento and published on 10 October, 1986, is among the best known and loved not only in Dalla’s career, but in the whole of Italian music history. The film reveals a multi-layered love story: between Naples and Caruso and between Dalla and Naples and Sorrento, but also America and jazz. He was a born jazz musician and found himself playing the temple of international jazz in New York years later.

The film offers the testimonies of the people close to Dalla at the time: the rock singer-songwriter and actress Angela Baraldi with him in Sorrento, Gaetano Curreri and Ricky Portera of Stadio who played in New York, the owners of the Hotel Excelsior in Sorrento, Guido Fiorentino and Lidia Fiorentino, together with the former concierge Antonino Galano and then bartender Angelo Leonelli, the music critic Gino Castaldo, the director Ambrogio Lo Giudice, the TV writer Nicola Sisto and Paolo Glisenti, in the audience that evening at the Village Gate. The story is completed with the private and previously entirely unreleased images of Lucio Dalla and the heart-wrenching version of pianist Danilo Rea.
