Gestione forestale sostenibile

At the forefront of preserving biodiversity

TIM contributes to sustainable forest management.

11/16/2022 - 06:00 PM

There are many initiatives that TIM has implemented to reduce CO2 emissions, with the goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2030.
Among our main initiatives is the purchase of energy from renewable sources, the more efficient cooling of data centres and the introduction of sensors to control power plant consumption, but also the promotion of circular economy initiatives, the development of TIM Green, a line of products and services designed with sustainability in mind, and the neutralization of CO2 emissions from the Group's websites.

With this in mind, together with Rete Clima, a non-profit organisation specialising in the promotion of sustainability, TIM has supported initiatives to safeguard the biodiversity of flora and fauna, both in Brazil with the contribution to the Maìsa REDD+ (Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation) project for the conservation of over 28,000 hectares of Amazon rainforest and in Italy with the forestation of an area in the Parco Nord in Milan.

To these initiatives TIM adds a new project to promote forest biodiversity in Città della Pieve and Piegaro, in Umbria, also in collaboration with PEFC(*) as part of Rete Clima’s Campagna Foresta Italia forestry campaign and with the moral patronage of the Ministry of Environmental Transition and the Ministry of Agricultural, Food and Forestry Policies.

With the project called Piante Elìte, TIM supports the protection of rare species in the Città della Pieve-Piegaro forest thanks to sustainable forest management techniques so as to increase their number and create a thematic itinerary on biodiversity in the protected area, to sensitise the local community.

In the affected area - which covers 160 hectares - plants belonging to rare species were identified and mapped with GPS (especially Rowan, Sorbus domestica, Oak, Cherry, Field maple).
To make these specimens grow and make them more vital, silviculture was used, a forest management technique that involves thinning out the competing plants that are in the area.
In this way the growth of the foliage and the photosynthetic capacity of rare plants is stimulated, also favouring the development of higher quality trunks present today in limited numbers.
In the western area of the forest, a thematic itinerary on biodiversity and valuable species was also created with the contribution of TIM, with 3 rest areas displaying informative signs on biodiversity and tree forestry with QR codes that refer to monographs on sporadic species and related information.
The Piante Elìte project is part of Campagna Foresta Italia, Rete Clima’s national forestry campaign supported by the TIM Group together with other companies, created with the goal of promoting forestation and forest protection practices, so as to produce benefits for the territory, for the climate and for the citizens who live in our country’s communities.
