Our country’s sustainable future? Digital

The Italy of the future will definitely be more digital. The lockdown experience tells us that: during that period the use of digital services increased very much. But a physical infrastructure alone is not enough: what can really make a difference is the capillary spread of digital skills.

The Italy of the future will definitely be more digital. The lockdown experience tells us that. During that period, video-communication traffic on fixed network increased almost 12-fold, for activities like smartworking and e-learning.
And there’s more: 35% of consumers increased their use of video-streaming services, a figure that hit peaks of 45% on our fixed network.
In Europe, we are the Country that grew most in both data traffic volumes and use of services and specific applications. Just think that average daily traffic increased an average 80% on the TIM fixed network; much more than the 40-50% increase recorded in other European countries.
The situation does not change much for the mobile segment where we recorded a 30% increase in average daily traffic.
On the digital side, Italy has great, unexpressed potential that we can and must work on.

The subject of training...

The health emergency experience has taught us that a physical infrastructure alone is not enough. What can really make a difference is the capillary spread of digital skills; those that enable us to use Internet and digital technologies to perform lots of jobs and more: from e-learning, to concerts, sports training sessions, health assistance and lots more.
To go from managing an emergency to designing our Country’s digital future we need to work on educating people to use digital, creating skills that are missing or are not spread uniformly.

Operazione Risorgimento Digitale is the travelling digital education project that we launched in 2019 with this in mind, and which became an online school during lockdown to take the voice of digital skills masters and experts into the homes of the Italians.

...and collaboration

To multiply the effects of our commitment, we are continuously promoting alliances and partnerships to improve future prospects.

For example, our support at the Festival dello Sviluppo Sostenibile 2020. On that occasion, Giovanni Ronca, Chief Financial Officer of TIM, took part in the panel “Infrastructures, finance and innovation for fair, sustainable growth”.

And our taking part in the Salone della CSR e dell’innovazione sociale  fits in the same way,  Maria Enrica Danese, Head of Sustainability Projects & Institutional Digital Channels of TIM, took part in the panel "Responsible organizations and companies: educate to be sustainable".
