Carbon offsetting sito web

Our website goes carbon neutral

With CO2web® for the carbon neutral goal

10/07/2021 - 12:00 AM

As of today, also our website contributes to the TIM Group's environmental protection goals. Thanks to CO2web®, a project of Rete Clima® -  a non-profit organisation specialised in promoting sustainability in organisations - we have joined with the goal of neutralising greenhouse gas emissions from our website operations.

In technical terms, it is called carbon offsetting. In practice, it translates into the adoption of initiatives to offset harmful emissions, generating a positive impact of equal environmental measure.
To apply this to our site, we started by calculating the CO2 emissions generated by hosting GruppoTIM.it, i.e. the energy consumption of the servers on which our pages are hosted with all the necessary services, such as air cooling.
Once we calculated the harmful emissions, which were approximately 3 tons C02eq (corresponding more or less to  18,000 hours of work at the PC), we chose to neutralise them through a certified international project generating carbon credits.

Forest protection in Brazil

The Maìsa REDD+ Project  we joined aims to protect an area of the Brazilian Amazon, preventing the deforestation of more than 6,000 hectares of rainforest over the next 30 years and creating better living conditions for the local inhabitants.

In order to protect forests and biodiversity of  flora and fauna (over 29 endangered animal species), we support the training of local productors for the sustainable management of forests and the responsible  use of the land.

Preventing deforestation also has a positive impact on climate change, one of the issues which are being discussed at Expo Dubai 2020.

Urban forestry in Milan

Apart from neutralising emissions in Brasil, we have decided to support an upgrading forestry plan that covers the Parco Nord in Milan, with an extension of 620 hectares of which more than 350 are forest areas.

We shall contribute to plant 70 new trees which, during their life cycle (30 years), will absorb more than 40 tons of CO2.

The aim of this project is to increase the naturalness and urban green areas and to generate services for cities and residents.
The Parco Nord in Milan is an international success story, which highlights the potential of urban forestation as a tool for redevelopment of the territory but also as an opportunity for real green development of the city.

TIM Group against climate change

Offsetting the emissions generated by our site is part of the TIM Group's sustainability strategy, which makes environmental protection one of its priority action areas, with the goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2030.

A goal we want to approach step by step.

By 2024, we aim to add 15% green smartphones to our range of sustainable products and services.

By 2025, we are committed to using energy exclusively from renewable sources, to zeroing indirect emissions (Scope 2), and improving our eco-efficiency by 50%, in part through the use of fibre and 5G.

Additionally, on a daily basis we contribute to lowering our customers' environmental impact by offering services and solutions that promote new sustainable ways of working, producing, learning, living and travelling
